How I Grew My Insurance Business
Recently I took some time to speak with Mark Weisenberger who publishes a podcast called the, “Ultimate Business Transformation Show.” We talked about how
Hatch Insurance Group started, how my career started, and how I’ve grown HIG into a successful insurance company.
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in International Finance and received a job opportunity in Manhattan. The intention was for me to learn the business and eventually run the Beijing office of the insurance company that hired me, but as we were doing various parts of our business, we purchased seven companies throughout Europe. They asked me if I wanted to help run the holding company in London and as a 26 year old, I was eager to accept and get started. I ran this company in England for over 2 years. It was a very steep learning curve, but I learned a lot and to this day I still use examples from that. It was a great experience that lead me into the insurance business.
A few years later I met up with a friend of mine who, after learning my background, suggested I start selling insurance. I was afraid to sell insurance because I didn’t know much about it, but he got me started in his agency. I worked for his agency for about 9 years then decided it was time to open my own insurance business. I opened the full-service insurance agency about 15 years ago with a partner who specialized in life and health insurance, then changed the name to Hatch Insurance Group when my partner retired.
When I first opened my insurance business I didn’t want to make cold calls. Instead, I got referral leads by reaching out to people I knew – friends, family, associates, etc. and telling them what I do. I’ve had a lot of success with this method, as well as success with networking – here in Salt Lake and nationwide. I’ve created great relationships with people who then go on to introduce me to their friends. That’s how we’ve grown our business.
